On May 7, 2025, CFB Winnipeg proudly marked its centennial with a ceremonial Freedom of the City Parade; an honour that symbolizes the enduring trust and connection between the military and the citizens of Winnipeg. Held in the courtyard of City Hall, the event was a powerful tribute to 100 years of service, community, and shared history.
The parade was led by members of 17 Wing, who marched with precision and pride through downtown Winnipeg. Presiding over the ceremony were Colonel Jody Hanson, 17 Wing Commander, and Scott Gillingham, Mayor of Winnipeg; both of whom delivered remarks that underscored the importance of the military’s role in the city’s past, present, and future.
This event echoed the original granting of Freedom of the City in 1992 by then-Mayor William Norrie, Q.C., and served as a reaffirmation of the strong civic-military partnership that continues to thrive today.
With formal salutes, ceremonial presentations, and a strong turnout from the public, the parade was a moving celebration of unity, honour, and legacy. It stood as a proud highlight of the 100th anniversary celebrations—bringing together military personnel, civic leaders, and community members in a shared moment of reflection and pride.
