Holiday joy abounds at the MFRC Holiday Gift Shop 2024

The holiday season kicked off early at 17 Wing Winnipeg as the MFRC Holiday Gift Shop opened its doors once again for a three-night shopping experience for military children from December 4 to 6. Generously sponsored by Magellan Aerospace – Winnipeg this year, the Gift Shop has become a cherished event, spreading joy and warmth throughout the 17 Wing community during the festive time of year.

Sgt. Aaron Devost, Henry, Jack and Lesley Devost

Lesley Devost, whose family was posted to Winnipeg from Cold Lake, AB, in July 2024, shared what the experience means to her family. "Events like this are really important not just for newly-posted-in families, but for everyone. It helps new families feel part of a community and meet some wonderful people at the same time," she said.

On the last night of the Gift Shop, December 6, Lesley brought along first-time shoppers Henry and Jack. Like the past two nights, the MFRC team and volunteer "elves," including those from Magellan, worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make it a delightful event for all. Every detail was thoughtfully arranged, from the beautifully decorated space to the fully stocked gifts, wrapping supplies, and delicious snacks.

The MFRC was also filled with laughter and holiday music, creating a festive atmosphere that enveloped everyone. The children present, including the Devost boys, were thrilled to explore the adults' and kids' gift sections, their eyes lighting up at the wide variety of available gifts. With everything priced at just $0.25 each, every child could find that perfect, unique gift.

Lesley pointed out, "Not all families have the financial capacity to let kids shop for siblings and/or parents. This is a really affordable way for everyone to feel special during the holiday season."

Other parents and guardians who attended were equally grateful for this event. For many, it was a unique opportunity to create special memories with their children, especially for those who are frequently away.

As the evening wrapped up, the children left with hands full of carefully picked and beautifully wrapped gifts, their faces beaming with joy. "The boys had a blast shopping for each other and us. They loved the independence of being able to pick a gift all on their own. The hardest part for them will be keeping it secret!" Lesley said.

Volunteer elves like Julie Robichaud from Magellan found the event to be truly meaningful. She shared, "It was so much fun and so rewarding to help the kids with their gifts. It's just so special and I thank you so much for asking us!"

Ron Drepaul, General Manager at Magellan Aerospace – Winnipeg, added, “It is both a delight and an honour to support this incredible event. Seeing the happiness and pride the act of gift giving brings to these young ones is very rewarding. This event spreads holiday cheer and also nurtures important values like independence and generosity and we are proud to play a role in helping these children experience the joy of giving.”

Reflecting on the event, the Holiday Gift Shop proved to be a heartwarming experience for everyone involved. It offers more than just a shopping trip or gifts; it also allowed military children to learn valuable skills and uphold important values. Magellan’s support was key in making all this happen.

The MFRC sincerely thanks Magellan Aerospace – Winnipeg, our 17 Wing leadership, and all the amazing volunteers for making this event such a success with their support and participation. We are already looking forward to next season, knowing the positive impact this event has on the kids and the joy it brings to families.
