17 Wing recently wrapped up a successful four-week Women in Sports slo-pitch clinic in partnership with Home Run Sports Training Centre, delivering eight engaging sessions designed to build confidence and elevate on-field performance. The program welcomed 16 participants and focused on developing key fundamentals, including hitting, pitching, throwing, and fielding.

A defining feature of the clinic was its dedicated all-female coaching staff, whose leadership played a central role in the program’s success. Coaches took on specialized roles throughout the sessions guiding athletes through proper batting mechanics, refining pitching techniques, and leading defensive drills to strengthen throwing accuracy and fielding consistency. Beyond technical instruction, the coaching team emphasized encouragement, mentorship, and creating a positive learning environment where athletes felt supported to grow and explore a new sport.

Participants highlighted the impact of this coaching approach, noting that instructors were not only knowledgeable, but also approachable and motivating. Many credited the coaches with helping them sharpen their skills while building greater confidence in their abilities. The presence of an all-women coaching team was especially meaningful, with attendees appreciating the strong representation and relatability it brought to the experience.

Feedback from the clinic was overwhelmingly positive, with participants reporting noticeable skill improvements and increased engagement in an active and healthy lifestyle supported by continued learning and development. Many described the sessions as both educational and enjoyable, expressing interest in future programming.

Building on this success, everyone is encouraged to explore the CAF Women in Sport Grant as a way to expand similar initiatives. Opportunities may include introductory clinics, “try-it” events, or skill development programs that continue to reduce barriers and create inclusive environments where women can participate, develop, and lead in sport.
